The Leica SL-System is the embodiment of the digital era in professional photography. As a mirrorless system camera with an electronic viewfinder and electronic shutter, the Full-Frame Leica SL2 impresses with versatility, ease of handling and robustness. Its versatility is underlined by its maximized compatibility with lenses from other Leica systems. The Leica SL2-S is the perfect choice when you're looking for a hybrid photo- and video camera.
The Leica SL system offers the best of the best, regarding if you’re a photographer or a videographer. Let’s take a closer look at the Leica SL2 and Leica SL2-S cameras.
The Leica SL2
First up is the Leica SL2. This camera combines a 47 megapixel full frame CMOS sensor with state-of-the-art sensor-based Body Image Stabilization, to get the best image quality possible with all Leica lenses. The amount of detail in the DNG files you get with the Leica SL2, is unprecedented. The Maestro III processor enables fast burst shooting with the highest detail rendition. Composing your image and checking your focus and exposure is a breeze with the OLED EVF. The EVF of the Leica SL2 has 5.76 million dots of resolution, which guarantees the clearest view through a Leica lens. These new technical achievements paired with a large 3.2" rear LCD and the essential Leica three-button control layout make the SL2 the most capable and approachable professional system camera. The handling of the camera is and lay-out of the menu structure is very intuitive and won’t get in the way between you and the decisive moment you want to capture. The Leica SL2 features multishot mode. In this mode the sensor shift technology increases the resolution of the Leica SL2 to 187 megapixels, resulting in an extreme increase in detail resolution.
Don’t need the high resolution of the Leica SL2 or are you looking for a more video oriented system? The Leica SL2-S is for you! With its new, 24-megapixel BSI-CMOS sensor and two separate recording modes for photos and videos, the Leica SL2-S is a hybrid camera that combines the needs of photographers and filmmakers. The sensor also offers very clean results in low light situations, so you don’t have to worry about raising the ISO
Leica SL2-S for video
The Leica SL2-S provides not just photographers, but also videographers and cinematographers with outstanding possibilities – which are continuously optimized via the firmware updates released for SL-System cameras on an ongoing basis. The Leica SL2-S captures 10-bit 4:2:2 videos with Leica’s L-LOG gamma, at frame rates of up to 60 fps. Thanks to the integrated viewing LUTs, the user is able to have full control throughout the recording. Another pro-level trait is the camera’s unlimited recording time for videos, which means that the video length is only limited by the respective (internal or external) memory. With the latest Firmware update, the Leica SL2-S is capable of outputting a Cine-4K RAW signal via HDMI at up to 60fps to external recorders. As a result, you can now record in a 12-bit RAW format with recorders such as the Atomos Ninja V, the Atomos Ninja V+ or a Blackmagic Video Assist 12G HDR. This unprocessed data is extremely clean, preserving the maximum dynamic range, color accuracy and detail that is needed for a professional post-production workflow.
Leica SL Lenses
Not only do you have access to the autofocus SL lenses, that are the best optics Leica has made, but with the use of adapters you can also use Leica M and Leica R lenses. This allows for unlimited creative possibilities. The Leica SL autofocus lenses deliver unrivalled image quality. This in combination with a fast and accurate autofocus system makes the SL system introduce a new photographic experience. The Leica SL lenses are designed with optical systems that guarantee exceptional image quality at all focal lengths, apertures and focusing distances at an incredible speed. If autofocus zoom lenses aren’t your thing, the APO-SUMMICRON-SL prime lenses sure are. These primes are as close to perfect as currently possible. Both the construction and the design of the cutting-edge Summicron-SL series for the Leica SL system represent the next step forward in the development of lenses. Extreme precise manufacturing methods and measuring technologies have been developed specifically for the production of these lenses – resulting in more compact dimensions and a considerably lower weight, as well as a truly outstanding imaging performance. In the construction of the APO-Summicron-SL lenses, particular attention has been paid to the prevention of stray light and reflections. Needless to say all Leica SL bodies and lenses are weathersealed.
