The Leica M2 is a classic 35mm rangefinder camera that was in production between 1957 and 1968 and was originally introduced as a more affordable and simpler version of the Leica M3. Even though it was designed as a more affordable version, the Leica M2 offers a few features that make it the preferred choice for some photographers. We regularly have the Leica M2 for sale at the Leica Store Amsterdam. If you don’t see any Leica M2 cameras listed below, please see our current offering of Used Leica Cameras.
The Leica M2 is a workhorse through and through. It being a fully mechanical camera means it doesn’t require a battery to operate. Just like it’s ‘bigger brother’ it simply keeps on going no matter the conditions you’re working in. The brass body of the Leica M2 is very solid and is extremely durable. Just like you’re used to from other Leica M cameras.
One of the things of the Leica M2 that made it more affordable is the rewind mechanism.
The frame counter of the Leica M2 was made of a plate under the film advance lever that you have to manually reset back to zero after reloading. A system that closely resembles that of the Leica III series. It does not automatically rewind back to 0 when the film spool is removed.
When it comes to framelines this is where the Leica M2 really differentiates itself from the M3. Where the M3 has 50mm, 90mm and 135mm framelines, the Leica M2 features 35mm, 50mm and 90mm framelines. Especially the option of 35mm framelines without the need for goggles, makes the Leica M2 a very attractive choice for photographers that prefer wider and standard focal lengths. The viewfinder offers a 0.72 magnification and is slightly more prone to flare.
